A Day Exploring Universal Studios Hollywood and Los Angeles | Universal Studios Hollywood Universal City

Visit Universal Studios Hollywood Universal City CA!

Los Angeles is a vibrant city full of famous attractions, and no trip here is complete without a visit to Universal Studios Hollywood. Located in the San Fernando Valley area of LA, Universal Studios Hollywood offers visitors the unique experience of exploring the world's largest movie studio and theme park in one exciting destination.

In this travel blog, I'll provide tips on navigating Universal Studios Hollywood and the best rides to experience. I'll also share some of my other favorite things to do in LA to make the most out of your visit to this wonderful city. Grab your walking shoes and sunglasses - we have a full day of exploring ahead!

Arriving at Universal City Studios Hollywood:

Universal Studios Hollywood is located in Universal City, an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County just off the 101 freeway. Public transportation by metro and shuttle is available, but driving and Uber/Lyft are the easiest ways to arrive. Parking costs $25 for general self-parking and $40 for preferred parking closer to the entrance.

Once you arrive, be prepared for extensive security screening involving bag checks, metal detectors, and sometimes full-body scanners. Leave prohibited items behind to speed up the process. The front gates open at 9am, so arrive early if you want to maximize time in the park. Consider purchasing tickets online ahead of time to skip the long ticket booth lines.

Making the Most of Your Day:

With so many rides, shows, attractions, and Harry Potter wizardry to experience, it's impossible to do everything at Universal Studios in one day. I recommend focusing your morning on the studio/production backlot tram tour and the lower lot rides. Then spend your afternoon immersed in the themed lands of Springfield, USA and Hogsmeade/Diagon Alley.

If time and budget allow, definitely get the Front of Line pass. This lets you bypass regular lines and makes a huge difference in being able to ride everything. Staying at one of Universal's on-site hotels also grants early park admission an hour before the public opening time.

Must-Ride Attractions:

Here are my picks for the top rides you absolutely cannot miss at Universal Studios Hollywood:

  • Studio Tour - This 45-minute tram ride takes you behind the scenes of real working movie and TV sets. Highlights include the iconic Bates Motel from Psycho, Wisteria Lane from Desperate Housewives, and the plane crash set from War of the Worlds.

  • Jurassic World - Hold on tight as you get flung through the jungles on Isla Nubar with raptors, Dilophosauruses, and the massive Tyrannosaurus rex!

  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Step into Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley to experience rides like Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Flight of the Hippogriff.

  • The Simpsons Ride - Take an exciting and hilarious ride through Krustyland with the Simpson family on this simulated rollercoaster.

  • Transformers: The Ride-3D - Fight alongside Optimus Prime on this intense 3D battle that puts you right in the middle of the Autobot vs Decepticon action!

Dining at Universal Studios:

Fuel up throughout the day at Universal's themed restaurants and food stands. In Springfield U.S.A, grab a Krusty Burger or flaming Moe's. Diagon Alley offers traditional British fare like bangers & mash and fish n' chips. You can't leave without trying Butterbeer, the wizarding world's signature frothy drink.

If you have formal dining reservations, I highly recommend the Taco Rock experience at Antojitos Authentic Mexican Food. Plus, CityWalk outside the park gates offers plenty more unique dining and nightlife options when you're ready for a break from the rides.

Other Attractions Around Los Angeles:

While Universal Studios should take up the bulk of your day, there are a few other quintessential LA experiences I recommend incorporating into your trip:

  • Hollywood Walk of Fame - Wander along the star-studded sidewalks of Hollywood Boulevard and take a picture with your favorite celeb's star.

  • Santa Monica Pier - Ride the Ferris wheel and carnival rides or play games at this lively seaside pier. Stick around to watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean.

  • Griffith Observatory - Get a breathtaking view of the LA skyline and the famous Hollywood sign from this iconic art deco building perched high above the city.

  • Venice Beach Boardwalk - Soak up the eclectic street performances, colorful murals, and lively oceanfront scene at this popular beach hangout spot.

  • The Getty Center - Admire stunning architecture and expansive city views in addition to works by van Gogh, Rembrandt, and more at this remarkable art museum.

Where to Stay:

Hotel options range from budget motels to luxury five-star resorts in LA. For convenience, book a room at one of Universal's on-site hotels like the retro-themed Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort. The Hollywood area also offers lively nightlife and attractions within walking distance. Beverly Hills and Santa Monica put you close to shopping, beaches, and restaurants.

No matter where you stay, be sure to leave time for exploring LA's diverse neighborhoods like artsy Venice, trendy Silver Lake, and family-friendly Pasadena. With its year-round sunshine, iconic sights, and endless entertainment options, you'll find there's something for everyone to enjoy in Los Angeles.

The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel - This iconic historic hotel is located right on Hollywood Blvd. It has a pool, fitness center, restaurants, and cocktail lounge onsite. The Spanish Colonial decor and prime location make it a luxurious choice. Nightly rates average $300-400.

W Hollywood - With modern, sleek suites and great views, this hip luxury hotel is in the heart of Hollywood's action. There's a rooftop pool/lounge, spa, and direct access to entertainment venues. Rates range from $350-500 per night.

The Garland - Just steps from Universal Studios, this resort-style hotel features two pools, an onsite restaurant, and spacious suites with spa-like bathrooms. Price per night is usually $300-450.

Dream Hollywood - The modern, artsy rooms at this boutique hotel come with rainfall showers and amenities like free WiFi and minibars. The rooftop pool area is a highlight. Expect rates around $350-500/night.

London West Hollywood - Elegant, sophisticated British-inspired decor defines the all-suite rooms at this swanky WeHo hotel. Onsite dining, a rooftop pool, and prime Sunset Blvd location add appeal. Nightly rates average $500-700.

In conclusion, a day exploring the magic of movies at Universal Studios Hollywood, followed by hitting up other top LA attractions like the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Santa Monica Pier, makes for an unforgettable Southern California vacation. With proper planning using these tips, you can experience the best of Universal Studios and the excitement of Los Angeles.
