Venice Makes Fee and Reservation Obligatory for Day-trippers | Here’s How to Travel to Venice Italy

Venice Makes Fee and Reservation Obligatory for Day-trippers

From January 2023, Venice will impose a fee on day-trippers and book reservations when visiting the historic city to handle the visitors more effectively who often exceed the number of residents, leading to overcrowding in narrow streets and heavy foot traffic.

Day-trippers in Venice will have to adhere to new rules starting January 16, 2023, officials announced on Friday.

Tourists who do not intend to stay overnight in hotels will need to register online and pay a fee for the day of their visit. Depending on the season and the city’s crowdedness, these costs range from $3.15 to $10.50 per individual.

Tourists are required to pay a fine of 300 euros if they don’t abide by the rules and fail to present proof with a QR code.

Around 19 million day trippers were visiting Venice in 2019, the last year when tourism was booming before the pandemic and earned a fraction of the revenue generated by those staying overnight.

About Venice makes fee and reservation obligatory for day-trippers, Venice’s tourism commissioner dismissed any proposal regarding reducing the number of tourists visiting the historic city.

“We won’t talk about number cutoffs. We’re talking about incentives and disincentives,” Simone Venturini stated during a news conference held in Venice.

The reservation and fee strategy had been mulled over some years ago but was postponed during the pandemic. Covid-19 travel curbs caused tourism in Venice to disappear, letting the city dwellers have the city to themselves for the first time in decades.

Visitors continued to grow while the number of residents steadily declined, overburdened by congestion, high food delivery costs, and frequent floods ravaging homes and businesses.

Following the new regulation, Venice plans to “find this balance between (Venetian) residents and long term and short term” tourists, expressed Venturini, assuring that the rule “will be simple for visitors” to follow.

The tourism official feels optimistic about the new rule and expects that the fee-and-reservation rule will “reduce frictions between day visitors and residents.” During peak tourism seasons, the city, measuring merely 5 square kilometers, is home to more tourists than residents.

Fee and reservation obligations exclude children below 6 years of age, differently-abled individuals, and owners of vacation apartments in Venice only if they can provide evidence of paying real estate taxes.
